What is False Negative Identification Rate (FNIR)?
FNIR is the proportion of 1: N searches for which the correct identity is present in the gallery but the system does not return it above threshold. Missed matches lead to undetected duplicate accounts or failed watchlists. As galleries age, FNIR will vary at different thresholds - tune carefully.
FNIR can be reduced with more accurate capture, better alignment, and by segmenting thresholds by environment/device class. Retain liveness requirements to ensure you’re always comparing people not props. When high FNIR hinders onboarding or compliance, consider embedding identification within risk-based identity verification to collect additional evidence before making a decision.
