PEP? What is PEP?
A Politically Exposed Person (PEP) is an individual holding prominent public functions—or their family or associates—who are higher risk for corruption. It’s not a crime. It’s a risk indicator. Banks need to know if they are exposed to PEPs, the nature of the relationship, and apply enhanced controls as necessary.
This means enhanced due diligence at onboarding, closer transaction monitoring, lower transaction thresholds, and written justification for decisions made. False positives occur. Names are often not clean. Watch for fuzzy matching, alternate spellings, aliases, and geographic nuances.
