What is Watchlist Screening?
Watchlist screening is the process of comparing customer or counterparty data against sanctions lists, PEP lists, law‑enforcement lists and internal risk lists. Names are complicated—transliterations, aliases, typos—and so fuzzy matching and “context” fields (DOB, address, nationality) become important. The goal is accuracy: quickly identifying true hits and easily clearing out near‑matches, without overwhelming analysts.
Effective programs record list versions, match scores and screening decisions; re‑screen customers when lists change or when triggered by lifecycle events like adding new payees or jurisdiction changes. Suppressions are time‑boxed and auditable. If a match is close and value is high, escalate the identity verification and freeze the corridor.
